Explore the history of American music and the cultural history of the United States in our innovative online course that weaves together music and history. Build a timeline of American music in the context of major historical events.

Our American Music History course is an 18-lesson online class designed for students in grades 7-12 that explores the history of American music. Each lesson traces a different genre of music with short video lectures, music playlists, storytelling, geography, and history. 


Lessons inspire critical thinking, cultural understanding, and appreciation for music.

Students explore the history of American music including blues, jazz, rock and roll, soul, country, rap, punk, and more as we build a timeline of American Music.​ Beautifully designed on the Canvas platform, the online course aligns with UC A-G California State Standards for visual and performing arts and the ethnic studies model curriculum.

Frequently Asked Questions

How heavy is the workload for the student?

Students progress through a new lesson each week at their own pace. Lessons include short video lectures, curated music playlists, videos, reading excerpts, and weekly activities. The total time to complete the lesson and activity each week is approximately three hours.

What public charter schools do you work with?

Music History Hall is currently an approved vendor at several public charter schools in California including Sage Oak, Compass, Epic, Sky Mountain, Ocean Grove, South Sutter, Granite Mountain, BEST Academy, and EXCEL Academy.
